"kumbh mela" is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. It is considered to be largest peaceful gathering in the world with over 100 million people visiting during the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2016. It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Ujjain, Allahabad,Nashik and Haridwar.

Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four places every twelfth year. Ardha ("Half") Kumbh Mela is held at only two places, Ujjain,Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year.The rivers at these four places are: the Ganges (Ganga) at Haridwar, the confluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati at Allahabad, the Godawari at Nashik, and the Shipra at Ujjain.

On this auspicious occasion of Kumbh Mela the divinity and spiritual aroma of Ujjain attains the highest level when millions of pilgrims sage and sadhus gather to take dips and also worship the holy river Kshipra.
The Kumbh at Ujjain is also called "Simhastha" as Jupiter enters the Leo sign of Zodiac ,Known as Simha Rashi ,The ritual of bathing in the Holy Waters of River Kshipra begins with the full moon day of Chaitra Month of Hindu Calendar (22 April 2016) and Continues for the month till full Moon day of Vaishakha ( 21 May 2016)

About Ujjain

'Ujjain' means the 'city of victory' (earlier known as Ujjayini) and is located on the western boundary of Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain is 55 km from Indore. It is situated on the banks of Shipra River.

Historical and Mythological Importance of Ujjain

Ujjain is one of the holiest cities in India. According to Indian astrology, zero degrees begins in Ujjain. According to the Mahabharata's Aranya-parva, Ujjain is one of the seven sacred moksa-puris or sapta-puris. The others are Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kashi (Varanasi), Kanchipuram, and Dwarka. It is said that Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripura at Ujjain.

The indomitable spirit of Ujjain is best exemplified by the legend of an ancient banyan tree named Siddhwat. The tree is believed to possess extraordinary spiritual vibrations and holy men meditate under it while others worship it. According to the legend, a ruler once had the tree cut down and covered the mutilated stump with seven iron plates, so as to show his authority. By the next morning, the tree had burst through the iron plates and come back to its original size. The tree is still alive and the object of redoubled veneration.

The Simhastha Kumbh Mela, would take place at Ujjain after a gap of 12 long years. It is believed that the holy dip washes away all the sins and the cycle of rebirth and death ends as the soul becomes divine
